Chattanooga,
TN: July 2015
This year 33 team members headed for Chattanooga in the
big, black bus for a week of VBS, construction work, and befriending
some kids in the community of East Chattanooga. Partnering with
Hope for the Inner City, our VBS team held a "top secret" club
at the Carver Community Center, while our 2 construction teams built a
deck with a ramp off the home of a disabled woman, and sanded and
repainted a community center and their community playground equipment.
It was hot!
Two days before we left for Chattanooga, this
community was dealt a severe blow. A terrorist attack at the Navy
Operational Support Center & Marine Corps Reserve Center took the
lives of four US Marines and one Navy sailor.
With the help of www.newyorksaysthankyou.org,
who supplied us with the wooden Stars of Hope, our team was able to
paint and place our messages of support, comfort, and hope at the site and in the
nearby trees lining the sidewalk. The stars will eventually
be given to the family members.
